Blossom Festival

Please come and join the fun at the Creston Blossom Festival this weekend. We are participating in the following events:

1. Parade on Saturday, May 22. It starts at 11:00 and runs from the high school to Overwaitea’s parking lot. Our thanks to Pat and Dave Huet for the use of their tractor and flatbed trailer; and from decorating assistants Anne Hepher, Charlene and Troy Rast, Jen Comer, and Jeanne Kay Guelke; and to Heide Wille for loaning float items. Come cheer those brave souls who agreed to dress up and ride the float!

2. Chili cook-off on Sunday, May 23. This event runs from 11:00-3:00 at Spirit square, downtown at 11th. $2 will get you a paper cup, spoon, lots of samples, and a chance to judge your favourite chili. Nearly all of our ingredients have been locally grown and donated by Randy Meyer (beef), Charlene Rast (beef), Joanne Gaillius (beans), Wayne Harris (cheese), Heather More (tomatoes and onions). Onions, garlic, herbs, hot peppers, and spices are from Carmen Rockwell-Hoover, Karen Powis, and Jean Hoover.

If you’re downtown for either event, please bring a camera (set to high resolution!) and submit one or two photos to cvfoodaction@yahoo.ca for the website and/or calendar.

Report on Home & Garden Show

CVFAC member Len Parkin reports the following from ‘on the floor’ at the Home & Garden Show last weekend. (summarized)

The Food Action Coalition, the Farmers’ Market, and several other groups and vendors joined together in a 30′ display booth, organized by Caroline Martin with lots of help. I hesitate to start naming names because so many participated, both in set-up and throughout the weekend, greeting all the show-goers. The College of the Rockies provided the large display panels used as a backdrop.

Jessica and Len were interviewed by CIDO local radio during the show. Len invited CIDO radio to be on site for the first day of the Farmers’ Market June 19th. This is so positive and we will also get lots of advanced advertising before the market opens because of the connection we made with president Dave St. Germain.

A significant number of vendors have asked for advanced application forms for participation in the Farmers’ Market. Len believes this to be a record for interest at such an early point in the season.

Caroline and Gord Martin of Cherrybrook Farm set up a cherry-pit-bag toss as a fundraiser for the CVFAC, netting about $50.

The cooperation and the message of us all working together was very important to several key people in the town and RDCK who saw what was done. This led to interest in learning more and setting up meetings with some of our own key people.

Calendar 2011

The Creston Valley Food Action Coalition is planning to create a calendar as a fundraiser for the fall of 2010.

We need your help!

Photographs
If you would like to submit photographs for possible inclusion in the calendar, here are some guidelines. Photos must be:

    Horizontal, or landscape format
High resolution digital files (minimum of 2MB)
    Taken in the Creston Valley
Portray agriculture in some form, such as:

      Orchards/Fruit
      Gardens/Vegetables
      Farms/Animals/Grains
      Other/Beekeeping/Cheese Production

Photos must be emailed to cvfoodaction@yahoo.ca on or before May 31, 2010. Limit of five entries per photographer. A committee will be evaluating each entry and selecting the thirteen to be included (one for the cover, one for each month). You will be notified if one or more of your photos has been chosen by the end of June.

By submitting a photo, you agree that the CVFAC has the right to use this photo in the production of the 2011 calendar, the proceeds of which will go directly to the CVFAC with no financial remuneration to you. You will, however, be entitled to a free calendar!

Information
Why do you need another calendar? Because this one will be useful. We’re looking for all the dated information that could be helpful to farmers, producers, and consumers in the valley. We need your input as to what you would like to see–especially if you can provide that information.

Examples:
CVFAC meetings
Projected Farmers’ Market run dates
Grain Share purchase deadlines
Moon Phases
When to start seedlings
Projected dates for vegetable/ fruit ripening

These are just to get your mind rolling. What else do you think would be useful? Please email any tips or ideas to cvfoodaction@yahoo.ca by May 31, 2010.

Thank you!

Home & Garden Show

Come on down to the Creston & District Community Complex this weekend to the Home & Garden Show. The Creston Valley Food Action Coalition, the Creston Valley Farmers’ Market, and several of our partner producers have booked a thirty-foot booth for the weekend.

Drawing families into the booth will be a cherry-pit-bag toss set up by Cherrybrook Farms. I believe there will be bedding plants for sale and plenty of information available on what the coalition is all about.

Hours are:
Friday, April 16, 2 pm – 9 pm
Saturday, April 17, 10 am – 5 pm

See you there!

Welcome!

Welcome to the online home of Creston Valley Food Action Coalition.

The site is under construction and will be morphing over the next few weeks into a truly useful tool. Until then, aspects will come, go and, move around, so don’t get too excited about any one part.

Please check back after April 16! We’ll have more up by then.
