In 2010, FCM’s Green Municipal Fund conducted a survey to learn whether Canadian municipalities are considering sustainable food systems in their planning process

They wanted to find out:

  • Are sustainable food systems important to municipalities?
  • What are municipalities doing about sustainable food systems?
  • Are municipalities looking for resources, funding and training?
  • Where are Municipalities going to find information on sustainable food systems?
  • Check out the results http://www.bcfoodsecuritygateway.ca/modules.php?name=Content&pa=showpage&pid=6066 and check out the rest of their great website as well!

    Got Milk?

Michael Schmidt with Mohawk supporter Danny Beaton at a recent press release for food freedom in Ontario.

“The right to buy food direct from a farmer is as old as our country. Yet, today, that right is being taken away from Canadians by a government that insists that only corporate Canada be responsible for feeding our citizens.” –Michael Schmidt

Despite the lack of mainstream media, some of you may have heard about Canada’s ‘raw milk war.’ Dairy farmer Michael Schmidt is presently on day 30 of a hunger strike to defend our natural right to food freedom. He has said he “is willing to die if it’s necessary.”

Canadians who wish to access safe and sustainably produced fresh milk or artisanal dairy products have heretofore bought shares in cows from small family farms –often with heritage breed cows. Although raw milk is legal in every other G8 country, our government is now putting an end to ‘cow-sharing’ and Michael’s hunger strike is a last resort. PLEASE SIGN AND SHARE THIS PETITION.

    RDCK: Regional Ag Plan

The future of our Agricultural Plan lies in your hands.

The Regional District of Central Kootenay Agricultural Area Plan has now been completed and endorsed by the Regional District Board.

Please see below to access the final documents, including the Agricultural Area Plan and Background Documentation.

It is apparent that nothing will happen with this plan until after the next RDCK elections that are scheduled for the 19th November 2011, if even then.

We would be grateful if anyone reading this would contact their RDCK director and send a message telling them that you expect them to start implementing the RDCK Agricultural Plan without delay – and if you attend a meeting with any of the candidates – question them as to where and when they will start implementing our regional Agricultural Plan.

Here is a link to all the RDCK directors (telephone / Fax / Email etc. – Please make your feelings felt: Directors

This is important – please do not let the Ag Plan be buried…….

    Buy made in Canada products!

This was passed along by Nettie Lack of Mad Dog Farm, with Kootenay Local Ag Society

physics teacher in high school, once told the students:

That while one grasshopper on the railroad tracks wouldn't Slow a train very much, a billion of them would.
With that thought in mind, read the following, obviously Written by a good Canadian:

Shopping in Lowe's the other day for some reason and just for the fun of it  I was looking at the hose attachments .
They were all made in China . The next day I was in Home Hardware  and just for the fun of it I checked the hose attachments
There. They were made in Canada!
    Start looking.........
In our current economic situation, every little thing we Buy or do affects someone else - even their job.

A quote from a consumer:...my grandson likes Hershey's candy. I noticed, though, that it is marked made in Mexico now. I do not buy it any more.
My favourite toothpaste, Colgate, is made in Mexico now. I have switched to Crest.  You have to read the labels on everything.

This past weekend I was at Wal-Mart. I needed 60W Light bulbs. I was in the light bulb aisle, and right next To the GE brand I normally buy was an off-brand labelled, "Everyday Value".  I picked up both types of bulbs and Compared the stats - they were the same except for the
Price. The GE bulbs were more money than the Everyday Value brand but the thing that surprised me the most Was the fact that GE was made in MEXICO and the Everyday Value brand was made in - get ready for this - Canada at a company in Ontario . Their Equate Products are also made in Canada , and are very good.

Just to add my own experience on buying Made In Canada , I was looking for canned mushrooms that were made in Canada and could never find any, so I would buy fresh.  But a miracle happened, when in our Foodland store I found Ravine mushrooms - made in Canada with a
Little red maple leaf on can.  A little more money but When I opened the can I looked at mushrooms that look Like real mushrooms, not a mushroom that looks like It was cleaned in bleach.

Another product I no longer buy is Del Monte or Dole canned  Fruit. Del Monte is packaged in Taiwan and Dole is now a product of China .

Why should we pay for their fruit when our growers are left with Fruit rotting on the trees. E.D. Smith is still made in Canada buy their's, at least you will know what is in it and have some quality control.

So throw out the myth that you can not find products you Use every day that are made right here .  My challenge
To you is to start reading the labels when you shop for Everyday things and see what you can find that is made In Canada . The job you save may be your own or your Neighbour's'!(Your children & grandchildren, also) If you accept this challenge, pass it on to others in your
Address book so we can all start buying Canadian, one Light bulb at a time! Stop buying from overseas companies!
(We should have awakened two decades ago.)

Let's get with the program. Help our fellow Canadians
Keep their jobs and create more jobs here in Canada .

If President Obama insists on a 'Made in America '
Policy, which is commendable of him, to supportAmerican workers, we should do likewise.

     BUY CANADIAN!  Read the labels.
    Support Canadian jobs.

NO GMO Campaign Comes to Nelson

Genetically modified crops and foods are a threat to the environment and to the future of organic food and farming. What GM foods are on the market and what is coming? What actions can we take to stop GM apples, salmon and alfalfa? Join us to get the latest information and ask your questions!

    The Cost of Slow Food

We’ve all heard people say that slow food food isn’t for regular people, that it’s out of reach.

I’m not willing to give in to that story — and I’m not alone.

Last week, Slow Food USA launched the $5 Challenge, asking people to share a slow food meal for less than $5 on September 17. Thousands have already signed up — because we believe everyone should be able to eat food that is good for the eater, good for the grower, and good for the environment. If you believe it, too, pledge to take the $5 Challenge.

    Will you join us?

The idea is simple: get together with friends and family–or find a local event on our website–and share a healthy, affordable meal for less than $5 per person. Basically, if you are having dinner on September 17th, you can take the $5 Challenge.

Thousands have already pledged to take the challenge. Will you?

On September 17, we’ll send a message together. Real value meals — meals that reflect our values — should be affordable and available to everyone.

The Agriculture Plan has been completed and presented to the rural Directors of the RDCK.

    We now need your help.

The RDCK directors need to hear from farmers, homesteaders, gardeners and general citizens of the area that the Plan is important and needs to be implemented.

Please take 5 minutes to phone or email your Director – ideally before their next meeting on August 24th – and tell them how important farming and a regional food supply is to you.

Contact information for each Director can be found here.

The Ag Plan document can be read here.

13 Uses for Cucumbers (Besides Pickles!)

    1. Cucumbers contain most of the vitamins you need every day, just one cucumber contains Vitamin B1, Vitamin B2, Vitamin B3, Vitamin B5, Vitamin B6, Folic Acid, Vitamin C, Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium and Zinc.

    2. Feeling tired in the afternoon? Put down the caffeinated soda and pick up a cucumber. Cucumbers are a good source of B Vitamins and carbohydrates that can provide that quick pick-me-up that can last for hours.

    3. Tired of your bathroom mirror fogging up after a shower? Try rubbing a cucumber slice along the mirror, it will eliminate the fog and provide a soothing, spa-like fragrance.

    4. Are grubs and slugs ruining your planting beds? Place a few slices in a small pie tin and your garden will be free of pests all season long. The chemicals in the cucumber react with the aluminum to give off a scent undetectable to humans but drive garden pests crazy and make them flee the area.

    5. Looking for a fast and easy way to remove cellulite before going out or to the pool? Try rubbing a slice or two of cucumbers along your problem area for a few minutes, the phytochemicals in the cucumber cause the collagen in your skin to tighten, firming up the outer layer and reducing the visibility of cellulite. Works great on wrinkles too!

    6. Want to avoid a hangover or terrible headache? Eat a few cucumber slices before going to bed and wake up refreshed and headache free. Cucumbers contain enough sugar, B vitamins and electrolytes to replenish essential nutrients the body lost, keeping everything in equilibrium, avoiding both a hangover and headache.

    7. Looking to fight off that afternoon or evening snacking binge? Cucumbers have been used for centuries and often used by European trappers, traders and explores for quick meals to thwart off starvation.

    8. Have an important meeting or job interview and you realize that you don’t have enough time to polish your shoes? Rub a freshly cut cucumber over the shoe, its chemicals will provide a quick and durable shine that not only looks great but also repels water.

    9. Out of WD40 and need to fix a squeaky hinge? Take a cucumber slice and rub it along the problematic hinge, and voila, the squeak is gone!

    10. Stressed out and don’t have time for massage, facial or visit to the spa? Cut up an entire cucumber and place it in a boiling pot of water, the chemicals and nutrients from the cucumber will react with the boiling water and be released in the steam, creating a soothing, relaxing aroma that has been shown to reduce stress in new mothers and college students during final exams.

    11. Just finish a business lunch and realize you don’t have gum or mints? Take a slice of cucumber and press it to the roof of your mouth with your tongue for 30 seconds to eliminate bad breath.

    12. Looking for a ‘green’ way to clean your faucets, sinks or stainless steel? Take a slice of cucumber and rub it on the surface you want to clean. Not only will it remove years of tarnish and bring back the shine, but it won’t leave streaks and won’t harm your fingers or fingernails while you clean.

    13. Using a pen and made a mistake? Take the outside of the cucumber and slowly use it to erase the pen writing, also works great on crayons and markers that the kids have used to decorate the walls!
